Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CRA Business Number and where does it go on an invoice?

A CRA Business Number (BN) is a unique 9-digit identifier assigned to your business by the Canada Revenue Agency. Your GST/HST account adds a 'RT 0001' suffix (e.g. 123456789 RT 0001). This number must appear on all tax invoices issued to GST/HST registrants.

Do I need to charge HST or GST in every Canadian province?

It depends on the province. Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, and PEI use HST (combined federal + provincial). Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec use GST (5% federal) plus separate PST or QST charged provincially. Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon apply only the federal GST at 5%.
